The blue whale is the largest known animal which has ever lived on earth.
It can swim at speeds of up to 18 miles per hour.
Blue whales live for 30 - 40 years.
It eats up to four million krill (over four tons) per day.
It can blow a column of air 40 feet up into the air.
Between 1930 and 1931, 30,000 blue whales where killed in the Antarctic.
Only about 10,000 - 12,000 blue whales remain in the world's oceans today.
SIZE:
It can grow to over 100 feet long - as long as four buses parked in a line. The average size 82 feet, but the biggest one ever weighed was 180 tons and 100 feet long.
The heart of the blue whale is almost as big as a small car.
Its mouth is almost 20 feet wide.
The tail can be 20 feet across.
It can weigh more than 150 tons, the weight of 30 elephants.
The tongue of the blue whale is as heavy as an elephant.
THE WORLD'S BIGGEST BABY:
Blue whale fetuses put on most weight during the last months before birth. The fetus increases it weight by two tons in the last two months, which is 72 pounds per day.
A blue whale weighs about 2.5 tons at birth and is about 23 feet long. It doubles in weight in the first week of life.
A blue whale calf feeds off its mother's milk, which is rich and fatty, for about seven months, drinking nearly 400 pints daily. During this time, it gains 17 tons in weight, (eight pounds per hour or nearly 200 pounds per day).
From a length of 26 feet at birth, it may grow to 52 feet by 2 years old. At 8 months, when it is ready to leave its mother, it measures about 50 feet and weighs 22.5 tons.
TYPES OF WHALES:
Different types of whales evolved in response to their environment, the temperature of the water and the availability of different kinds of food. Today there are ten types of toothed whales with a total of 67 different species, and four main groups of baleen whales, totaling 11 species in all.
